Group Assignment with: William Yao and Gerardo Abogado
In the second week, we connected the parts we recorded the previous week. I recorded metal objects from the toolbox and the kitchen, William went out to record passing cars, and Gerardo mainly recorded robot sounds on the guitar with the whammy pedal. He then manipulated the sounds to imitate the dialogue between the robot in the dream and the small "helper" robot he meets, as well as the other insects in the scene. He also recorded sounds of information transferring to a phone connected to the guitar and the hard drive running.
Gerardo equalized the different sounds we recorded so they would blend together, and he played with lowering the bass in some sounds to make it feel like they were moving closer and farther away. The car recording was also manipulated and ended up sounding like an electronic storm in the desert, reinforcing the feeling of getting lost in the dream. In the background, I added more rustling sounds I recorded with screws and kitchen tools, creating a sense of robotization of organic experiences.
Finally, we decided to add a human voice at the end of the recording to hint that maybe all of this was a person’s dream.
I feel that this project had a very productive collaboration, and we managed to combine world-building with sound in a way I hadn’t imagined before our first meeting.
